What Are Sausage Rolls?

Since their invention, they have become very popular on the streets of London, and now they’re loved around the world. You can find many kinds of sausage rolls, like beef, pork, chicken, or even with vegetables for vegetarians. They are perfect for celebrations or a family snack, however you like! This easy, tasty recipe is here to make your day.
How to Make Sausage Roll?
Making sausage rolls is really easy and fun! To start, first make the dough for the pastry. Start by adding all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, oil, and water to form a dough, and let it rest for 1 hour. While the dough is resting, prepare the sausages by frying them for 2 minutes, then set them aside.
Take the dough and flatten it again to make some strips, then fold them. Keep the folded dough aside for another 10 minutes, and then flatten it again with a rolling pin. Cut the dough and wrap the sausages. Finally, bake the sausages and enjoy!
To make it perfect, you need to follow the exact portions and process, do not worry about that. In the next section, I will be giving detailed instructions. Keep on reading to follow them.
Sausage Roll Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Water (as needed)
- ¼ cup butter
- Chicken sausages (as needed)
- Oil (for frying the sausages)
- 1 egg yolk
- White sesame seeds
- Sesame oil
Direction
- In a bowl, take 2 cups of all-purpose flour, and add 1 tablespoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of oil. Mix all the ingredients. Then, gradually add water to form a dough. Make sure it’s not too soft or too tight. Cover the bowl and set the dough aside for one hour.

- While the dough is resting, take your chicken sausages and carefully cut small slits on both ends. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry the sausages for about 2 minutes. Then remove them from the pan and set them aside.

- After the dough has rested for an hour, sprinkle some all-purpose flour on a clean surface. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin until it’s flat but not too thin, best to go for a medium thickness.

- Spread ¼ cup of butter evenly across the rolled-out dough. Sprinkle a little flour on top of the butter. Cut the dough into strips. Your strips should look like this.

- Start folding from one edge of the strips, piece by piece. When you are done with the folding part cover the foldable dough again and let it rest for another 10 minutes.

- After 10 minutes, sprinkle some more flour and roll the foldable dough out again to a medium thickness. Cut it into square pieces, just enough to wrap around a sausage.
- Place a sausage on each square of pastry, roll it around, and gently seal the edges. Repeat this for all your sausages.

- Now the baking part. Grease a baking tray with a little sesame oil. Place your sausage rolls on the tray, brush them with egg yolk, and sprinkle white sesame seeds on top. Then bake them in an oven to 170°C (about 340°F) for around 30-35 minutes.

- Take them out of the oven and Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, and enjoy!

What To Serve With Sausage Rolls?
Sausage rolls are great on their own, to be honest. They taste heavenly even without any side dish or dipping sauce. However, there are also dipping sauces that pair very well with sausage rolls, such as tomato ketchup, sesame mustard sauce (a traditional dipping for sausage rolls), marinara sauce, roasted capsicum sauce, tomato chutney, spicy garlic aioli, harissa yogurt dip, and any other sauces you prefer.
Chef’s Tips
- You can make them ahead. Just before the baking part, wrap them individually in baking paper, place them in an airtight container, and store them in your refrigerator. Before serving, bake them as usual.
- Make sure your puff pastry is not warm when baking. For the best result, leave the pastry in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes before baking.
- While baking, leave some space between each roll, or they might get stuck together in the oven.
