What Is Chocolate Banana Cake
Chocolate banana cake combines the rich flavours of cocoa and chocolate with the natural sweetness of ripe bananas. This cake is a popular Asian cuisine with hundreds of reasons to fall in love with it!
You will get a decadent, deep chocolate taste due to the use of cocoa powder in the recipe. And, the bananas will provide a moist and tender texture. You can use dark chocolate if you want to prevent it from being overly sweet. Our recipe will surprise you with a semi-sweet taste with the moist and soft texture of the cake.
How to Make Chocolate Banana Cake
To make chocolate banana cake, start by peeling and slicing two ripe bananas. Set them aside.
In a large bowl, whisk one large egg and ½ cup of sugar until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. Add ¼ cup of cocoa powder and mix until lump-free. Then, add ½ cup of flour, ½ teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt, and ¼ cup of water, mixing until smooth.
Fry the banana slices in 1 tablespoon of butter for one minute, then pour the batter over them. Cover and cook on low flame for 15 minutes.
Cool, slice, and enjoy!
Chocolate Banana Cake Recipe
Servings: 8-10 slices, Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Course: Dessert, Cuisine: Asian
Ingredients
- Ripe bananas: 2 (peeled and sliced)
- Egg: 1 large
- Sugar: ½ cup
- Cocoa powder: ¼ cup
- All-purpose flour: ½ cup
- Baking powder: ½ teaspoon
- Salt: A pinch
- Water: ¼ cup
- Butter: 1 tablespoon (for frying banana slices)
Directions
Let’s Do Some Preparatory Work:
- Firstly, take two ripe bananas and peel them gently with your hands. I prefer using fresh bananas free from any spots or blemishes to get a smooth texture in the cake batter.

- Now, you need to slice the bananas into even, round pieces and set them aside.

We’ll Prepare The Batter Now:
- Take a large bowl to prepare the cake batter. This is the key step of our recipe, and it requires quite a lot of energy (chuckle!), so be patient.
- Add 1 large egg and ½ cup of sugar to the bowl and whisk the mixture thoroughly until the sugar is completely dissolved. I beat for around 5-6 minutes, take your time by frequently checking the consistency. You will get a smooth, uniform consistency once the mixing is done properly.

- Now, add ¼ cup of cocoa powder to the batter and start mixing again. This step requires extra attention because we need to make sure that the batter is completely lump-free, okay? Otherwise, the chocolate flavour will be unevenly distributed in your cake.

- Once the ingredients are nicely combined, it’s time to add ½ cup of flour. This time, add ½ teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt, and ¼ cup of water. Mix all the ingredients in one direction. Give enough time to get a smooth texture. The batter should look like the picture below.

Let’s Cook:
- Let’s get back to the banana slices we set aside earlier. Place them in a small pan like the picture below. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to fry the banana slices for 1 minute.

- One minute later, pour the cake batter all over the banana slices. I use a spatula to evenly spread out the batter. And, we’re almost done.

- One step is left only, cover the pan with a lid and let your cake get cooked for 15 minutes in low flame.

- You will get a perfectly baked cake after 15 minutes. Use a plate to flip the cake just like the picture below.

- It will look like this after flipping. You can check the doneness of the cake by inserting a toothpick or cake tester into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean or with just a few crumbs, the cake is baked perfectly. If the toothpick has wet batter on it, you need to bake it for a few more minutes and test it again. It indicates that the cake is fully cooked and has the right texture.

- Cool the moist and delicious chocolate banana cake completely.
- Finally, use a knife to cut it into slices and enjoy the soft and mouthwatering cake!

Side Dish Ideas for Chocolate Banana Cake
The taste of chocolate banana cake feels off without at least one complementary side dish. I love adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream to my cake.
Also, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or raspberry dessert sauce makes things better sometimes. You can add fresh berries such as strawberries or raspberries to add a refreshing tartness.
Chef’s Tips
- Choose a fully ripe banana to get maximum sweetness and flavour.
- The egg should be at room temperature when you use it for the batter. It will ensure a smoother batter.
- Do not overmix the flour, just keep the ingredients perfectly combined together. Otherwise, you’ll get a tougher and denser texture instead of a tender cake.
