What Is Dal Puri?
Dalpuri is one of the favorite foods of Bengalis. It’s a filling dish and very easy to make. As Its name suggests, this soft and delicious food is made from dal and flour. This dish is almost 100 years old, yet it remains as popular as it was in the old days.
How to Make Dal Puri?
To make this delicious snack, you need to prepare the filling first by boiling the red lentils and then cooking them with some spices and herbs.
For the puris, make the dough using flour oil salt, and water then. Roll the dough and shape it into puris. Fold the edges correctly and deep fry them in soybean oil. Drain the excess oil and enjoy them hot.

Ingredients
For the filling:
- Red Lentils: ½ cup
- Water: 1 cup
- Turmeric powder: ½ tablespoon
- Mustard oil: 3 tablespoons
- Garlic slice: 1 tablespoon
- Onion slice: ⅓ cup
- Roasted cumin powder: ½ tablespoon
- Chilli flakes: 1 tablespoon
- Coriander leaf
- Garam masala powder: ½ tablespoon
- Salt to taste
For the dough
- All-purpose flour: 2 cups
- Soybean oil: 4 tablespoon
- Salt: ½ spoon
- Sugar: 1 tablespoon
- Normal temperature water: 150 ml (adjust as needed)
For frying
- Soybean oil (for deep frying)
Direction
First, we need to prepare the lentil
- Take ½ cup of red lentils and gently wash them with water.

- The next step will be boiling the lentils. in a pan, combine the lentils with 1 cup of water, ½ tablespoon of salt, and ½ tablespoon of turmeric powder.

- Boil the mixture on low-medium heat for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on the dal so it does not turn mush!

Now, let’s prepare the filling
- In a pan, heat 3 tablespoons of Mustard oil. Yes, we must use mustard oil here for the right taste and flavor.

- Add 1 tablespoon of sliced garlic and ⅓ cup of sliced onion. Fry for a few minutes until it gets brown.

- Now, add the boiled lentils to the pan and mix it well.

- Next, add the spices, ½ tablespoon of roasted cumin powder, 1 tablespoon of chili flakes, chopped coriander leaves, ½ tablespoon of garam masala powder, and salt to taste.

- Cook for a few minutes more, then Let the mixture cool.

For the puri, let’s make the dough
- In a large bowl, add 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 4 tablespoons of soybean oil, 1/2 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Give it a good mix with your hand!

- Gradually add 150 ml of normal water to the mixture. Mix until a dough forms. You will be adding the water amount as needed.

- Cover the dough with a wet cotton cloth and let it rest for 20 minutes.

It is time to form the Puris
- Divide the dough into small balls.

- Press each ball gently and place a tablespoon of the prepared lentil filling in the middle.

- Fold the edges over the filling and roll the dough into balls again, then press them gently into puris.

Finally, fry the puris and serve
- In a pan, heat the soybean oil for deep frying.
- Fry the puris on medium flame until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Drain the excess oil from the puris and they are ready to be served hot. Emjoy!

What To Serve With Dal Puri?
Dal puri has its own unique taste and can be eaten on its own. However, it’s even better with chutneys, yogurt, or fresh salads. Many people also enjoy it with curries like chicken curry, beef curry, fish curry, or potato curry.

- Wheat flour can be used as an alternative to all-purpose flour.
- The Dal mixture should not become stiff. It ought to remain soft.
- You can also make the same recipe using soaked chana fal.
- Roll the puris to a medium thickness. Do not make it too thin.
