What Is Garlic Butter Toast?
Garlic butter toast is usually made with bread that is toasted and topped with a mixture of butter and garlic. Some people prefer adding extra herbs. It has a rich, buttery flavor with a hint of garlic that makes it so delicious. Garlic butter toast originated in the U.S. as an Italian-American dish, inspired by Italy’s bruschetta, which dates back to ancient Rome. It became popular when Italian immigrants replaced olive oil with butter in the early 20th century.
Since then, it has been popular around the world, with people customizing it by adding their preferred herbs, cheese, and other flavors to their liking. You can enjoy it as a quick breakfast, a side dish, or a snack with tea or coffee, however you like. Whether air-fried, pan-fried, or baked, garlic butter toast always comes out crispy, flavorful, and delicious!
How To Make Garlic Butter Toast
To make this homemade Garlic Butter Toast, start by mixing softened butter, chili flakes, chopped coriander leaves, garlic, and oregano in a bowl. Cut 4 slices of bread into triangles shape and make a hole in the middle of each bread slice. Insert an ice cream stick through the hole, then spread gently the garlic butter mixture on the bread slices.
Next, add mozzarella cheese (or any cheese you prefer) on top and repeat the same process for all the bread slices. Toast the bread on low flame in a pan for about 2 minutes with a lid until the cheese melts. When done serve and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!

Serving Ideas For Garlic Butter Toast
Garlic bread toast goes well with so many dishes! It’s perfect with pasta, whether it’s a tomato-based sauce or a creamy Alfredo. I also love it with fresh salads, the tangy dressing balances the rich butter and garlic flavors.
It’s great with broth soups like onion soup or bouillabaisse, but for me, it feels too heavy with creamy soups. It also pairs well with plain grilled meats like steak, chicken, or lamb. To make it even better, you can use a compound butter with lemon juice and fresh herbs like parsley or rosemary. And if you love dipping, garlic bread tastes amazing with marinara sauce, cheese dips, garlic aioli, or even a warm spinach and artichoke dip for an extra burst of flavor!
Chef’s Tips
- Use softened butter instead of melted butter for garlic toast. This helps the garlic stay mixed and spread evenly without sinking to the bottom.
- For extra crunch, you can bake the slices for up to 10 minutes or use an air fryer. If not serving right away, don’t overbake, garlic bread hardens as it sits!
- To store in the fridge, Butter the bread, freeze the slices on a baking sheet, then store them in a freezer bag. Bake from frozen at 350°F for 7-10 minutes. You can also freeze leftover garlic butter in small portions for later use.
- If you want to make vegan garlic toast, skip the butter and add twice as much olive oil. If you prefer, substitute vegan butter, but watch the bread closely while baking, as vegan butter can burn faster.
